Ask Terry Questions Credit Card Cancellation

Credit Card Cancellation

By Terry Savage on March 27, 2017 | Credit/Debt

I signed up for what I thought was a rewards card, but it ended up being a credit card. It has not been activated yet. How do I go about cancelling this without it affecting my credit score? Thanks

Terry Says

It shouldn't affect your credit score to open, then immediately close a credit card.  (It's only the longest-held cards that impact your credit history.)  But I'm dying to know why you thought a "rewards card" wasn't a credit card?! Anyway, just contact this issuer and tell them you made a mistake and to please close the card and notify you in writing that this has been done.
