Ask Terry Questions Index Funds

Index Funds

By Terry Savage on August 05, 2016 | Investments

Your article in the Times about index funds suggests that index funds beat most managed funds over a 20 year period. Are index funds the best way to invest if your time horizon is only 10 years? Thank you.

Terry Says

Index funds beat most managed funds over the past 5 and 10 year periods.  Or, put more appropriately, the vast majority of managers failed to beat their index benchmarks.  Index funds are inexpensive.  So you save on fees.  But when the "market" falls, index funds will most certainly fall as well.  They are "the market."  It's your job to decide how much of your money should be invested in the market.  As for which funds -- as that column explains, the facts speak for themselves!
