Paying off credit cards as retiree
I have $15000 in credit card debt, paying $300 a month min. payment to them. Should I try to borrow that amount from bank to pay off quicker? All my wife & I make is $1670 a month on S.S. Have $600 house payment & of course utilities. Would my local bank be the ones to ask or will they do what is good for their business. have thought about bankruptcy but I read about alot of negatives to that also. Thank you if you have time for this.

Terry Says: The real secret here is figuring out how you could earn another $3oo per month. I know you are retired — but are there small jobs you could do, perhaps for cash to help out a neighbor? Could you walk someone’s dog during the day while they are at work? Could you drive another senior to do her shopping? I don’t know about your health status or physical abilities — but there is always someone in worse shape who could use your help. Ask your local senior center if they could help you find a paying job part time. I start with this solution because that is the REAL answer to paying down your debt — and if you put all that extra money toward your balances you could only have to do this for a few years!
You won’t get a personal loan because you aren’t working and have no income. Banks know this. And even online lending companies may offer you money to consolidate your credit card debt — but you could get in trouble again, charging them up. So I suggest you call the National Foundation for Consumer Credit at 800-388-2227. They will connect you to the nearest local agency. You can go in and talk with them — or do it over the phone. They will help you figure out how to deal with this burden and you can trust them completely.
