Can a senior live on only Social Security?

By Terry Savage on April 10, 2017 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I live in a board and care right now but am applying to senior apts who just take 30% of your income. By question is how do I live on only $900.00 a month that I will be getting from social security and SSI disability paments that I receive monthy. It seems impossible but I really need help on this one. Maybe a senior budgeting class for super, poverty level income. Thank you for your time. Marti

You are not alone.   More than half of seniors rely on Social Security for at least 90 percent of their income.  Every state has a department of senior services that will connect you to available programs, including food stamps, which could really help your expenses.  The management of the senior apartments will also be able to connect you with benefits related to your utility bills.  We are not letting our grandmothers starve, but you have to reach out for help to the agencies that will help support you.  Please write back if you are still in trouble -- but since you are smart enough to connect with me, I feel confident you will be able to find the resources available in your area.
