Heloc — wait to repay or now?

By Terry Savage on June 21, 2016 | Housing / Real Estate

My heloc matures in February 2020 and I have a balance of $10,200.00. I understand rates are going up and I have the means to pay if off. Should I pay if off or let it ride?
Thank you

Terry Says:  Aha — now you are becoming an interest rate speculator!  In the past week, things have taken a turn. The Fed says it can’t raise rates yet because the economy is too weak.   And, indeed the global economy does look gloomy.  Plus the concern over the British exit from the European Union is causing money to rush into the safety of government bonds, pushing rates down.

So do you want to speculate on the future direction of interest rates?  That is what you are dong.  Right now, it looks like your HELOC rate won’t rise for a while.  But pay close attention.  When rates do rise, there will be a lag before your loan resets. Then you can make a better decision about when to pay it off.
