Ask Terry Questions reaching social security age

reaching social security age

By Terry Savage on May 26, 2017 | Financial Planning / Retirement

This is an answer, not a question: The one social security alternative I haven’t seen you mention is: If one signs up for social security on their full retirement age and continues working and paying into social security, they will continue to receive social security payments every month, and their benefit will continue to increase accordingly every year just as if they had never signed up. This is in addition to cost of living increases. I signed up at age 65 and received social security payments and continued to work and pay into social security. Every October I received a payment increase, and in January received my cost of living increases. I was 75 when I was forcibly retired in 2013. This information might give someone another option to consider.

You are absolutely correct, and I think I alluded to that in the column.  It's a small increase in benefits from working longer -- and only happens if you are earning more than some of the earlier years you worked, that are included in counting your benefit calculations.
