Taxes and estates

By Terry Savage on March 21, 2020 | Wild Card

Hi Terry,
I was the executor of my parents’ estate in 2019. It was a very modest estate that was split among six children. Do I have to file taxes on behalf of the estate? Thank you

Terry Says

I thought I answered this earlier, but just in case . . . There may be no taxes owed, but if the will went through probate a return must be filed for the estate in the year of probate. Ask the attorney who helped you go through probate for the appropriate documents. Unless the estate was over $11.2 million, there will be no Federal estate tax due. Your state may have its own lower level for estate taxes to be paid.
