Ask Terry Questions Direct Deposit on returns

Direct Deposit on returns

By Terry Savage on April 10, 2020 | Wild Card

In 2018 I put our direct deposit information on my return we were due a refund. Got letter from IRS saying we owed taxes from 2004 so we didn’t get refund. On our 2019 taxes I didn’t include deposit information because we still owed back taxes. So, my question is will they get the deposit information from 2018 or do I need to get on the portal (when available) and give deposit information?

Terry Says

Probably they will send you a paper check to the address on your 2019 return. It won’t be docked for back taxes. But Iwouldn’t fool around with trying to put deposit info in now. The Federal portal isn’t up yet. TurboTax has one (see home page at TerrySavage.com) but again, I wouldn’t complicate things at this pont.
