Coronavirus relief payment question

By Terry Savage on May 04, 2020 | Wild Card

I listen to you on WGN all the time – thank you for always sharing such great insight.

My question is regarding a payment that I received based off my 2018 tax return. My 2019 tax return is very different than 2018 as I lost my husband to cancer and I am now the head of household with 2 children (18 and 15). I just filed my 2019 taxes – will the system update my covid payment based on my 2019 tax filings or is there some sort of appeal process? Or will it not be updated since I did not file prior to the checks being distributed.

Terry Says

Here’s an interesting possibility — but don’t tell anyone! If they reviewed your 2018 return, and you filed jointly, you will likely get a $2400 payment, which you may keep! (and MAYBE, two $500 payments for your children each of whom was under 17 when you filed!)
And if they got around to your 2019 return, you will get the $1200 payment and $500 for your youngest child.
Please do write back one day and let me know what happens!
