Ask Terry Questions stimulus check for dependent adults

stimulus check for dependent adults

By Terry Savage on May 13, 2020 | Wild Card

My mother is a disabled adult living in a assisted facility. I claimed her on my taxes last year because I paid about half of her expenses. but mainly because she moved here from California and does not have a state Tax ID so in the past she has not received her refund. I tried speaking on her behalf with my power of attorney forms but I was told she needed a Tax ID. She is in a wheelchair and it hard to take off work and try to lift her in my car to get this done.

Because she was claimed as my dependent she did not get a stimulus check, if I amend my taxes and have her do her own taxes , will she get the past stimulus check? Are the next round of stimulus checks for dependents under 16 years also?

Terry Says

First, if she was claimed as a dependent on your federal tax return she wouldn’t get a stimulus check. And you can’t change that now.
But the second part of your question confuses me. There is no “state tax ID”! The state used the Social Security number to deal with tax issues. What refund are you talking about? From California state taxes? Or Illinois? She would have to have had income or a credit to get a refund, and that doesn’t seem likely given her situation.
Please feel free to write back with more details.
