Stimulus Check – Shared child custody
Hi Terry, I have shared custody of my 13 yr old with her father (never married). I have primary physical custody and he pays me child support. He claimed her on his taxes this year, so he received the additional $500 stimulus check for her. He does not want to give me half even though our daughter has been with me 100% since March 1st. I know this isn’t specifically your area but I checked the IRS website and could not find any details on this type of situation. You’re always so knowledgeable on a variety of things, I figured I’d ask. Thanks for your time!
Terry Says
Why don’t you just give me his phone number and I’ll give him a call (for a column I’m working on). Perhaps he would like to see his name in print. Or, he could give you $250. I’m serious!
This is my pet peeve! And you can’t believe how much it makes my blood boil to hear so many stories like this. It took TWO of you to make this child. To be petty over giving you half the stimulus is beyond aggravating. I’m making a list. And checking it twice — Like Santa, I know who is naughty and who is nice!
