RR Retirement

By Terry Savage on October 14, 2020 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Hi terry
My husband worked for the railroad. As his wife, i am now receiving a retirement pension.

Question, if he procedes me in death, i will then receive his benefit and lose mine. Will i than be entitled to social security?

Terry Says

Honestly, I am not an expert in RR retirement benefits — although I do know they INCLUDE a credit for Social Security. Here’s the official statement:
The Tier 1 Benefit component amount of your employee, spouse or divorced spouse annuity already includes credit for the railroad worker’s earnings covered by social security taxes. When you file for social security benefits (SS benefits), the RRB must reduce your Tier 1 component by the amount of SS benefits you receive.

I think you need to contact the RR Retirement Board about your specific situation. I’m assuming you are one of my Chicago listeners/readers. So here is the address and phone of the Chicago office: Rm 901 844 N Rush St Chicago, IL 60611-1275 Telephone: (877) 772-5772
Call and ask them about your specific situation.
