Delay in Receiving 2019 Tax Refund and also Stimulus Check
Hello Terry! I often enjoy listening to you when you are on the Air on WGN. On April 15, 2020 my tax preparer filed my 2019 taxes electronically. I an due to receive a $1066 refund. About a couple of weeks later my tax preparer notified me that my return couldn’t be filed electronically, so they would have to mail it to the IRS.
To check on the status of my 2019 refund I logged onto IRS.gov. I couldn’t find any info there, but I took a moment to check the status of my stimulus check. To my horror it informed me that my stimulus check had been issued on April 20 to a bank account ending in ‘1171’. I had made dozens of phone calls to the IRS beginning in May. I was finally able to speak with an IRS representative in early August. A trace was put on the stimulus check. Last week would have exceeded 90 days since the trace was placed. I was informed in late September by an IRS rep that they added a 3911 form to my file. Was told I should get both checks by late October. I called in late October and was told both my refund check and stimulus check status’ were still under review and I should call back after the trace expired in mid-November.
I called back on Monday November 16 and was told that both issues will need an additional 60 days. Today I heard of a stimulus check deadline of Saturday Nov 21. Does this deadline apply to me and can I have some advice on I might proceed. It just seems as I’m getting a run around. I don’t mind the delay if you think it’s legitimate. I understand that there is a backlog of work at the IRS.
Thank you for this avenue for advice,

That’s terrible — and I would never use that tax preparer again. There is no reason the original return shouldn’t have been filed electronically. Sounds like the preparer made a huge error. If the preparer was with a big company, I would contact them and demand help.
As for your current situation, you are caught in the switches. This has nothing to do with non-filers registering for a stimulus check. But if a 3911 was filed, there is little more you can do. One thought is to contact the IRS OMBUDSMAN office, meant for situations like this. Call this number and tell them your story: 1-877-777-4778.
If you still don’t get the stimulus check, next year you can file for a credit in the amount of your unpaid stimulus. But please use a different tax preparer. This person should be reported to the IRS. You might tell him/her that you are going to do this, and maybe he can shake something loose!
