Ask Terry Questions Stimulus Checks from 2020 on taxes being filed

Stimulus Checks from 2020 on taxes being filed

By Terry Savage on January 28, 2021 | Wild Card

Hi Terry. We have 2 sons (23yrs and 21yrs) that live at home with us. 23yr old graduated college and working full time for 1.5 years. 21yr old working full time/no school. We claimed them as dependents on our 2019 taxes that we filed in 2020. We are planning on not claiming them on the taxes that we will be filing this year for 2020. If we do not claim them, will they received the stimulus checks that were sent out in 2020? They never applied for or got the checks because they were considered dependents. If they are not eligible for the past stimulus checks, should we still be claiming them as dependents? I love your email updates on money matters and read your website often!! Thanks so much.

Terry Says

You have the right plan. Do NOT declare them as dependents, and file your 2020 return as soon as possible.
Let THEM file their own individual returns, saying they are not claimed as dependents on any other return.
Then in Line 30, they can claim BOTH stimulus checks.
