IRS CP80 letter
Caught your blurb yesterday about this letter the IRS is sending out, but did not catch it all on WGN Radio. My mother who is 100 years old got the CP80 letter from the IRS for her 2020 1040. Seemed strange to me that the IRS got the V coupon, the payment but not the 1040 form when they all got mailed in the same envelope to Louisville. The CP80 said that she has a credit on her account and that they did not receive her tax form.
Nevertheless, I copied her tax form had her sign it again and sent it on to the IRS in Salt Lake City. I believe your response about this is that the IRS is late processing the forms for 2020 so the computers are sending out these letters as they do not recognize the tax forms being received this far removed from 2020. You also said file the CP80 form away and do not worry about it.
Am I correct? Scary letter for seniors to receive from the IRS with no proper explanation as people worry they are going to start to be charged fees for not filing their taxes. Any other thoughts?
Thank you,

The IRS acknowledged they made another mess for themselves by sending out these letters. And they said they have stopped sending them!!
It’s a shame you followed the instructions and resent her return. That will slow the process even further! Eventually it will get straightened out. And at age 100 I know she doesn’t have so much time to wait for any refund that is due to her! All I can say, is just wait, and wait, and wait!!
They have her money, they’ll get her return –the original one — and get it straightened out. Don’t do anything else.
