Ask Terry Questions Income Tax Identity Theft

Income Tax Identity Theft

By Terry Savage on March 07, 2022 | Social Security

I received a Notice CP11 from IRS showing I owe $7000 due to tax computation error on a 202l return. It was addressed to me alone, and I only do joint returns with my husband. We have not done nor submitted our 2021 return yet. My SS# was correct on the CP11. I filled out and mailed a Form 14039 Identity Theft Affidavit. Should I do anything else? Can we submit our joint return?

Here’s what the IRS had to say:

Terry,

Unfortunately, likely they’ll need to file on paper.

Each of them can initiate an IP PIN application, but that won’t help them until next year.

Particularly if they have some idea how, where or when the theft might have occurred, they can contact local authorities. I believe the FTC also has a complaint process too.

They can also check out IRS.gov/identitytheft.

Thanks.
