Ask Terry Questions security of on-line input of social security number

security of on-line input of social security number

By Terry Savage on July 21, 2022 | Chicken Money

Hi Terry,

Am considering getting an I-bond and also need to do Medicare, but Very uncertain about putting my social security number on-line. How secure is it? (If this helps – I have an Apple desktop and Bitdefender for extra security, but not VPN. My concern stems from my 1 1/2 year old Apple showing Malware as I started setting it up, so I took it locally for a check and old computer info transfer. I do limited transactions on it. We also have wifi for tv and phone usage working from the router and modem.) Am I being over cautious? I had let the I-bond opportunity pass, until I heard you talking about it on GN today. I have learned a lot from you on WGN. Thank you for your time on this.

Thanks,
Leslee

You’re correct to be concerned about putting your SS number on any digital form or email that is not secure. BUT the TreasuryDirect.gov website is the MOST secure place on the Internet! Trillions of dollars are moved through this government funding site every week! They guide you to establish a secure account, and not only do you input your SS number but your bank account and bank routing numbers to get started. It is the ONLY way to buy I-bonds.
