Ask Terry Questions Purchasing Ibonds as gifts

Purchasing Ibonds as gifts

By Terry Savage on December 30, 2022 | Chicken Money

Hi Terry,
Quick question on buying ibonds as gifts. I see in my Treasurydirect.gov account that I am able to buy ibonds as gifts, but where in the process do I input the recipient’s SSN information? I am buying for my wife and I don’t know where her SSN comes into play. Please advise if you can! Thank you and Happy New Year (P.S. I love hearing your segment on WGN!)

Actually, you would be better off just opening an account in TreasuryDirect in her own name and using her SS number. You can have the money taken out of your bank account. That will make it much easier in the long run! There is no tax implication for this gift, as spouses can give an unlimited amount to each other.

Then just five her a nice card, and be sure to include the account number and the password you chose for it!
