Ask Terry Questions Checking POA to change name

Checking POA to change name

By Terry Savage on March 24, 2023 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My husband passed. His name on checking still. I want my niece to be executor/beneficiary. Do I have checks printed with her name or just add her to account? I do have a Will and Trust drawn up.

Terry Says

Whoa. That is not the answer. If his is the only name on the checking account, you will have to present the bank with a death certificate to get it transferred into your name. Same thing if the account was in joint name.

And now you need to CHANGE your revocable living trust, to add your niece to give her those powers. And you’ll probably want to rename all but your everyday checking account into the name of the RLT, so she can take over if you are incapacitated.
