Are T-bills a good hedge against a recession ?

We’re invested in Schwab’s Intelligent Portfolios. I’ve been taking money out of them and buying T-bills. Is this a smart move at this point? The gain is almost the same as the market with my S I P accts. and there is no loss of capitol. I’m 80 and my wife is 81 with no children to inherit so we don’t need to leave anything. We have a Living Trust and my brother will take that over when we’re gone but we’d like to spend down what we have before that point.
