Should I Take Social Security?

By Terry Savage on March 28, 2025 | Social Security

Hi Terry,
I am a retired teacher with a pension. Having turned 65 this year I am now on Medicare. I would like to use my Social Security (I have 40 quarters from before my teaching days) to pay for my Medicare premium. Questions: should I wait until I am 67 to apply for SS? Will SS still be there in 2 years with DOGE looking to save every penny they can?

Terry Says

If SS isn’t there in two years, we will have a lot more problems than this! So I still advise waiting until full retirement age to take benefits, and paying for Medicare out of pocket for two years.
