Social Security

By Terry Savage on June 03, 2025 | Social Security

My husband passed away May 22 2025, a week before his May social Security benefit was to be deposited. Since it was for April, Social Security confirmed it was his April benefit, they withdraw the benefit that was deposited in May because it was he had passed away before it was paid. I have to apply for spousal benefits to get it but since my benefit is a larger amount his estate and heirs will not get the payment. He /we are not going to get a benefit he earned. Sounds very wrong. Can you confirm this is the correct action by SSA?

Terry Says

Yep, that’s correct. If a person dies during the month, the current check is returned. For example, if the person died in July, the check or direct deposit received in August (which is payment for July) must be returned.
Good thing your benefit is larger than your late spouse’s benefit. If so, no point in applying. I’m sorry for the loss of your husband.
