Ask Terry Questions RMD in birthday year

RMD in birthday year

By Terry Savage on August 11, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I will turn 73 in December 30 of this year. Do I then have one day to take my RMD in this year as I turn 73, or should I take it prior ?

Terry Says

You actually have until April 15th of next year to take your first RMD. But then you must take next year’s RMD at some point in 2026. That means two big withdrawals in one year — and that could even raise your Medicare Part B premiums in subsequent years.

You can take your birthday year — 2025 — RMD at any point this year. I suggest you do that. AND, ask them to withhold roughly 20% for taxes.
