Ask Terry Questions Social Security

Social Security

By Terry Savage on August 01, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I have filed for social security and have been approved. I would like to at least have federal taxes taken out but do not know at what percentage. How do I figure this out, so my husband and I are not having to pay out a lot come tax time?
thank you!

Heres a link to updated 2025 tax brackets.

Figure out how much you will earn, and your marginal tax brackets. Not all of your SS will be taxable. But to get started just have then withhold your marginal percentage and you should be safe.
If you get a refund or if your total income changes next year, you can always adjust your withholding.

Or you could not withhold and file quarterly. Your CPA could tell you how much is required. And how to do that.
