SSDI and SS retirement benefits

By Terry Savage on September 15, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Hi, I am on SSI Social Security disability. I turned 65 in November. Is it possible to get both SSI and my retirement benefit because I did work from 1976 all the way through 2007 when I became disabled also my Medicare premium right now is About four $500 a month. Will that go down or be free when I turn 65

Terry Says

When you reach your full retirement age, which will be 67, your SSDI will automatically convert to earned SS retirement benefits (which should be about the same amount). And at that point you’ll pay standard Medicare premiums. At that point if you are very low income, probably you’ll sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan.
