401k RMD Start Date
I turn 73 in 2026. Do I need to wait until my actual birthday in 2026 to take my RMD for 2026 or can I take it before my actual birthday in 2026? Example, if I turn 73 on May 1, 2026, can I take my RMD for 2026 in April of 2026.
Terry Says
You can take it any time during the calendar year — OR up until April 15th of the next year (which would mean taking two distributions in one year, not advised as it could raise your Medicare Part B and D premiums!).
I suggest having taxes withheld from the distribution. And don’t forget the calculation is based on the ending value of your retirement accounts from the preceding year.
