Cook County real estate tax increase

By Terry Savage on November 17, 2025 | Wild Card

Can you do a segment on WGN- CC late tax bills and suburban 2025 tax increase for 2026?
I got my 2nd install yesterday 11-15-2025, it says pay free online, but if you use a credit card they charge a big fat fee. If you you e-check it is free supposedly? I don’t want any gov. entity having access to my checking. As for the late 2nd install, I looked up their excuses and its because of new software and what have you excuses? The first install in 2026 will be late also. I live in Glenview and next year my taxes are going up at least 12-13k. CC doesn’t provide services to me for that type of increase. I am a disabled FF/PM on a fixed income and my wife works part-time as an ECE Teacher for peanuts. Please expose this lame do nothing CC government for ripping off the little guy like me. I’ll snail mail my 2nd install in to the CC people making good salaries for doing less for more.
Respectfully submitted,

There are two issues here:
First, there is the need to pay online. From now on EVERYTHING is paid online, even your Federal income taxes if you owe money! Get someone who understands technology to help you sign up to do this. Do it form your secure computer at home (not from your laptop at Starbucks!). I know it is uncomfortable, but trillions of dollars is transferred securely online every month, between banks, and between individuals — so you’ll have to get used to this.

Second, is the huge tax increase being felt by seniors. It is especially hard on seniors living on fixed incomes who want to remain in their homes. Have you explored all forms of tax relief?
Here is one key program: https://nationaltaxreports.com/property-tax-exemption-for-seniors-in-illinois/

There is also a real estate tax DEFERRAL program: https://tax.illinois.gov/research/publications/pio-64.html

I know this is a lot to handle, but you might want to contact the Illinois Department on Aging for an advisor to work through this with you: https://ilaging.illinois.gov/

And, third, as for the delayed bills — that is a HUGE problem, and the company that installed and was paid for the software has not been held accountable! But you still have to pay on time!
