Ask Terry Questions RMD TSP payments

RMD TSP payments

By Terry Savage on November 17, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

In your November 16, 2025 Orlando Sentinel column, you indicate that if one turns 73 in 2025, to avoid double RMD payments in 2026, one should take the first RMD payment by December 2025 to avoid possible negative tax consequences for 2026. TSP personnel told me that if the first RMD payment was in March/April 2026, i would not get another payment until December 2027, not December 2026. Is that incorrect?

Terry Says

Whoever told you that is wrong. If you reached age 73 in 2025, you should take a RMD by year end. You COULD wait until April 1 of 2026 — BUT you will still have to take the 2026 RMD sometime in 2026. And that “double” RMD could put you in a higher tax bracket and impact your Medicare Part B premiums, per the article.
