Change my 401K to a Roth

By Terry Savage on January 28, 2026 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I’m no longer working and am going to be 61 .
Is putting my 401K into a Roth account better ?

Terry Says

You would have to do a rollover — and pay taxes to do that.
Here’s how to do the rollover: https://www.terrysavage.com/rollover-now/

In general, this might be a good time to do the conversion. You aren’t on Medicare yet, so the income boost from the conversion won’t impact your Medicare Part B premiums. And you have a long time to make the money grow tax free. But you still have to make investment decisions for this Roth IRA.

Specific advice on this issue basically depends on your entire financial picture. You’re going to live many years, and you’ll need income because you should wait until age 67 to take SS to get the maximum benefit. Have you made a plan to cover your income needs — and let the money grow inside the Roth?
