Ask Terry Questions special needs grandchildren in another state

special needs grandchildren in another state

By Terry Savage on March 18, 2026 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I am sure other families have the same dilemma. Our trust was set up before the newer rules for IRA’s was passed by Congress. We now probably need to set up special needs trusts I assume inside our revocable trust. But we are in Illinois and our grandchildren are in another state and suspect this will thus be more complicated. Who do we go to for these changes-a special needs trust expert in our state or in the state they reside in and how do we find such a person? Do we need separate trusts for each of the three special needs grandchildren and the rules of which state will have to be followed are just some of the many questions we have and doubt if the people who set up our original trust have the expertise for this. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
