Fraud Protection

By Terry Savage on April 18, 2026 | Wild Card

Hi Terry, I never miss your appearances on WGN. I received an alert from Discover Bank that my social security number appeared on the dark web. There’s been no identity fraud as far as I know. I’m typically not impulsive but this concerned me so I looked for a fraud protection service. I signed up with Aura Fraud Protection to monitor my accounts. Do you think I need to pay for a service? Is there anything I can do personally as added protection? Is Aura considered reputable? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

EVERYONE’s info is on the dark web!!! I think the basic need is to freeze your credit at all three bureaus. Read this for instructions: https://www.terrysavage.com/identity-theft-update/

That way, no one can open new credit in your name. While you’re at it, review your current credit report to make sure there’s nothing unusual on it.

The advantage of these services is they say they’ll help you “fix” your credit if a problem arises. But likely one won’t arise if your credit is frozen and you keep your PIN info secure (not written in your wallet!).
