Ask Terry Questions E*Trade capital gains

E*Trade capital gains

By Terry Savage on May 14, 2026 | Investments

Good morning, I bought United Airlines stock in 2020 and have received a substantial capital gain of over $100k. Is there anyway to turn or transfer this long term capital gain into cash or another investment without increasing my AGI for 2026?

Terry Says

Nope. Capital gains taxes are the price you pay for success. And, by the way, that increase in “income” for the year will likely impact the Medicare Part B and D premiums you pay in a couple of years (there is a 2-year lookback). Consult your tax adviser. You don’t ‘receive’ capital gains until you REALIZE the capital gain by selling. So maybe you only want to sell half your stock this year, and postpone selling half until next year, depending on your price outlook for the stock and on your need for the money now.
