Graduation gifts for an eighth grader

By Terry Savage on May 16, 2026 | Wild Card

My grandson will be graduating from eighth grade. Would bars of silver be an acceptable gift? And where would I buy them?

Silver is trading around $75 an ounce as I respond to this question. For immediate pricing on silver bullion go to https://www.kitco.com/

That said, if you are trying to buy a one-ounce silver bar, you can expect to pay at least a 10% premium to the price of silver, to cover all charges. And perhaps possibly sales taxes.

Common-dated silver dollars (not rare coins) carry about a 20% premium. If you want to make the gift special, consider a silver dollar minted in the year of his birth. I figured he must be about 13 years old in8th great — and I searched and found this example at MoneyMetals Exchange.

You’re paying a “premium” but it’s a nice gift. And you can show him the Kitco website above where he can track the price of silver daily. Who knows — you might create your own little trader/investor if this sparks his interest in the markets!
