Pension

By Terry Savage on July 17, 2026 | Wild Card

Hello Terry,
I’m a 48 yr old parent of 4. I work for the Secretary of State and they offer us a pension once we retire after working 10/15 yrs. I have only been with company for the second time a year and 4mths. As a part time PSR. I can’t live on my own with this salary. I got an offer from another company that doesn’t offer a pension. Do you think I should leave sos and pursue this other company that is full time pay.

I’m not sure I understand all your alternatives, but at age 48 and with a young child, you are too young to be worried about pensions now. You need to make the most money you can NOW. Does the other company have a 40l(k) retirement plan (something most private companies use instead of a pension)?
Has the other company been around for a while, with a good track record of success in their business?
Is there an opportunity to advance and earn more in the other company, once you prove your worth?
These are the things you should be considering in a job move. Even if they dont’ offer a pension, you would sign up for the 40l(k) — Or if you start making more money you could open an individual retirement account.

Please write back and let me know what you decide to do, or I’ll always be wondering how it worked out!
