Social Security Sign up

By Terry Savage on August 11, 2026 | Social Security

We listened to your advice and I am waiting till 70 to start social security. I turn 70 in early March 2027. When my husband took social security a few years ago we set up everything online. With all the changes to the department is that still the case? I have a log in already.

Another question is how early should I apply? We travel the months of January and February so I would like to take care of it before we leave if you recommend that early of application.

Thanks for your advice. We’ve already created an estate plan with a trust and powers of financial and medical on your advice a few years ago.

You should start the process several months early — but do not fall for their “offer” of 6 months of “back” SS payments if you start immediately. That’s some new program inside SS, and it reduces your benefits by 8% for the rest of your life. So be sure to indicate you want to start benefits AFTER you reach age 70.
