Question regarding State of IL tax return

By Terry Savage on August 12, 2026 | Wild Card

Terry: H&R Block has e-filed my federal and state returns for years. This year, I was told I would receive a $3,900 state refund. After 3 months of awaiting my refund check, the state mailed me a letter saying I owed them $12,500 in taxes plus a $1,500 late fee.

They said I was missing my 1099-R form, which was true – it seems H&R neglected to include it. I certified mailed it to them, received by them July18th. I am still awaiting some kind of response. My H&R rep said not to worry – that I would not owe them any money – my missing 1099-R showed I had withheld money for state tax.

Sorry for the LONG explanation – I hope it makes sense. I also hope H&R is right that this should go away?

Terry Says

It should — but it could take a while. Get it in writing from HR Block that they erred in not sending the form. And then keep all records. And don’t hold your breath. Wait another 3 months and write back to me if you still don’t have it.
PS did you give the state direct deposit info for your account, or are you expecting a check in the mail?
