Surviving spouse social security

By Terry Savage on September 05, 2026 | Social Security

Hi Terry,
My husband died 2 years ago and I was told I could not collect his social security until my full retirement age because I am still working full time and make too much money as I am 63 years old. Please advise me as to my situation.

Terry Says

Please do keep working and do not plan to collect until your full retirement age. At that point, you can receive 100% of your late husband’s retirement benefit, IF it is larger than your own.
Your income is not part of this consideration. But whichever benefit you receive might be taxed, depending on your total income, when you do start receiving either your surviving spouse benefit or your own.

Again, keep working!
