SSA

By Terry Savage on September 10, 2026 | Social Security

Hi Terry,
I am 64 and have been on SS for 2 yrs. Was able to do so cause I have a recognized disability…RA. I know that disability turns into regular SS payments when I hit 65.
Back before my 1st payment, I had asked if I HAD to take payments cause I’m privileged to not need the $. I was told that I cannot “delay” payments while receiving SSD payments. IG its too late now but is this true? Any idea why?
I’m on the lower ave end of payments but I’m lucky enuf to have a 7 figure nest egg so I’d really like to postpone SS till 72. BTW, I plan on living into my 90’s 🙂
thx,

I am assuming you are on SSDI. Sorry, but Disability automatically converts to Social Security — not at age 65, but at YOUR full retirement age. And no, you can’t postpone that to get a larger benefit.
