ID.me

My husband and I have an account with TreasuryDirect.gov. We knew we needed to switch to ID.me. I already had an ID.me account for when I checked on my Social Security account. I tried to “attach” my Treasury Direct account to the ID.me for myself that was already set up. However, it seems that my husband’s SS# was used when we set up the T.D. account. and only 1 ID.me is allowed to be attached to the Treasury Direct Accounts. I was unable to attach my ID.me to the Treasury Direct account. My husband set up his ID.me and was able to attach it to our Treasury Direct account. Therefore, when we sign into out Treasury Direct account I must sign in under his ID.me. Not a problem, but we must keep his phone line active because he choose his number for the 2 Factor Auth. Is there a way to change the 2 factor auth to an email address because that is easy to keep active for free vs. paying for a phone line only to access Treasury Direct.

Whew – a lot of people are running into similar complications. Let me ask you a question: Have you created an estate plan using a Revocable Living Trust? That way, no matter which SS you use to create ID.me, the survivor always has access to the account.

But that’s not your question. Yes, there are other ways of authenticating your ID.me login. Please write back to the email you receive saying your question has been answered. Include your phone number. I’ll pass it on to my helper at ID.me (I have my own personal helper now!) and I’m sure he will reach out.
