To guard against title fraud, where someone forges a deed to take your home’s title, many counties run a free property fraud alert program. You register your name, and the county recorder or clerk emails you if any document is recorded under it.
These programs are run by counties, not states, so check your county recorder’s website.
Paid “home title lock” services offer similar monitoring, but they can’t prevent fraud either. The free county alert covers the main risk.
