Social security benefits
I am two years older than my husband. Half of my husband’s social security benefit will be higher than my own. Can I take my own social security benefit at age 67 and then switch to collecting 1/2 of my husband’s benefit when he starts collecting his social security benefit at age 67 or older? Or am I locked into mine for the rest of my life?
Terry Says
You can make the switch after he starts collecting, as long as HALF of his benefit is larger than your own full benefit. It’s called the spousal “top-up”. But he must file first. And then you must contact SS, since it isnot automatic.
But just make sure you wait until your own FRA to start collecting your benefit!
