Social security disability

By Terry Savage on October 22, 2026 | Social Security

I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Is it worth applying for social security disability? I’m 63, I’ll be 64 in January. I’m single, never married, and have no kids. I’ve heard Illinois SSD is not state taxed, but federally Illinois can tax me 50%-85%. Or is it worth just applying fir regular social security early (my FRA is not until 67)?

Terry Says

It takes a while to get SSDI. If time is of the essence, and you need the money now, then apply early for your SS benefits. Wishing you the best. They are doing amazing things these days.
