OK, this is a situation where you have “chicken money” — money you cannot afford to lose.
Your first choice is a CD — or maybe even better, TWO CDs — one for 6 months and one for one year. Or maybe $100,000 in one CD, and $50,000 in another — and the balance in a money market deposit account at the bank, so you have immediate access to it in case of need.
BUT the most important thing is that you get a good rate on your money. Many banks are offering low rates, hoping older customers won’t notice.
Right now, you should be able to get at least 4% on your money — in either a 6-month or 12-month CD. You might have to ask around at other banks, or demand to speak to a banker where you currently have your money. You have enough money that they should pay attention!
Plan B is to purchase U.S. Treasury bills. Right now 6-month T-bills are yielding about 4.25% — and you don’t pay state income taxes on the interest you earn. They are literally the safest investment in the world — short-term IOUs from the U.S. government.
