1099-G for deceased husband

By Terry Savage on February 01, 2021 | Wild Card

My husband died in December 2020. I need to get a copy of his 1099-G form to pay our taxes. I can not get into his Ides account. The phone number to call is always busy. Please help.

Terry Says

If your joint income was less than $24,800 in 2020, you aren’t required to file a tax return for 2020. So, in that case, don’t worry about it. (For 2020 you are still allowed to file jointly with your spouse.) Next year you can file as a qualifying widow.

Even if a 1099G DOES come in the mail, and your total income was under that level, you can ignore it.
But if arrives and that puts you over $24,800 — and he DID receive the benefits — then filing jointly will likely result in not owning taxes anyway because of the higher standard deduction of $24,800. If you earned more go to TurboTax or IRS Free file for help in filing.
