1099-INT from IDHS
Terry,
A friend received 1099-INT from IL Dept of Health & Family Services declaring several thousand dollars of taxable interest income for 2021. This friend has no clue as to the source (aka, what’s generating) this interest income. IDHS has been contacted but provides no help & of course no way to get IRS on the phone. Your help with solving this puzzle is appreciated!

Are you sure it was HIS social security number on the form? If so, he may have been a victim of identity theft.

I highly suspect this is a scam because this agency gives out benefits, but does not pay out interest!
He should file his tax return WITHOUT declaring this — and if the IRS matches it to him, he can explain that he has no connection to this.
Also send a registered letter to the agency, with signature requested, reporting this error. Keep a copy of the letter and the certified letter receipt to prove that you tried to resolve this mistake on their part.
