2018 Amended Return Accepted But Haven’t Received Refund Check

By Terry Savage on December 18, 2022 | Taxes & Economy

Hello Terry,

I mailed my federal amended return for 2017 in June of 2021 which to my surprise was processed and accepted in August of 2021 and shortly after I received my refund check with interest. However, I sent my amended 2018 return at the same time (June of 2021) which was in the “still being processed” stage for over a year. Finally in July of 2022 I received notification via the Amended Return Refund tool that my changes had been accepted and I should be receiving a letter notice and refund check in the mail in the next two to three weeks. I received the IRS letter notice that my refund of $1320 was approved but no check has arrived. I have not been able to get any answers from anyone on the phone. I’m getting worried since it was approved 7/11/22 and its been almost 5 months with no update on the matter. I have an ID account with the IRS and my 2018 tax record shows the update that I’m due a refund of $1479 (which I believe the additionally $159 is for interest accumulated but not sure). However, my account does not show a credit being due it says a balance of $0. I’m worried that someone cashed my check. How do I find out if they mailed my refund check or get an update on when I should receive it or do I need to request a replacement check or simply be patient? I filed these amended returns on my own, I do not have an account or CPA.

Side note: I moved in June so not sure if that has contributed to the delay but I received the IRS notice approving my refund at my new address and I have updated my account with my new address. I would greatly appreciate any guidance on next steps regarding my matter, thanks so much!

That is a complicated question. And, I’m not sure I have access to the answer. But if you’ll respond to the email this post generates, and give me your name, new address, and telephone number I will try to get it through the red tape at the IRS. So far, you’ve done everything I would have advised.
