Ask Terry Questions 2020 Fed Tax Refund

2020 Fed Tax Refund

By Terry Savage on May 05, 2021 |

Dear Terry – I follow you regularly in the Tribune and on WGN. I am hoping you can help or offer some suggestions. My wife and I electronically filed (with direct deposit to our checking account) our 2020 Federal return with the IRS back on March 18th. We have a considerable refund coming that we could really use right now as I am starting my retirement tomorrow and have felt the impact of Covid on our finances. The IRS states on their website that electronically filed returns should take roughly 3 weeks. I cannot get a hold of anyone over the phone and when I check the status of our refund, the message is always “Your tax return is still being processed.” We are not sure if we should be concerned or if this is just a result of a backlog or worse yet, our refund was lost. Given their lack of communication, we don’t know what to think or how to find out. Thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Terry Says

Your only choice is PATIENCE! The IRS acknowledges it is behind in refunds. in fact, some people are still waiting for 2019 refunds (for returns filed last summer)! There is no way to get through to them.
