2020 Federal Income Tax
We filed a paper 2020 Federal Income Tax return and mailed it in on March 13, 2021. We are expecting a $1332.51 refund (which includes the 2 $600 2nd stimulus checks my husband and I never received but are eligible for). We know the IRS is running behind…but what we need to know is if the IRS actually has received our return because we don’t want to be penalized for not filing by May 15, 2021. We have tried contacting the IRS both at IRS.gov/Refunds and at (800)829-1954. Those are both automated systems and when we input the required information it says “We can not provide any information on your return, if you mailed in your return you should receive your refund within 6 weeks of the IRS receiving your return”. How can we find out if the IRS has actually received our return?

You should ALWAYS send your return CERTIFIED, RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED. That takes the worry out of whether or not they got your return! Now, you just have to wait. If you addressed it properly they likely received it.
