Ask Terry Questions 2020 Federal Tax Refund

2020 Federal Tax Refund

By Terry Savage on May 19, 2022 | Taxes & Economy

Hi Terry, I enjoy listening to you on WGN radio. We filled our 2020 federal return on time last year and received a letter (6/21/2021) stating they were holding our refund until they finish reviewing our tax return. To date we still haven’t received anything from them. We recently received or 2021 refund check. I went on the IRS.gov website and put in the required information for “Where’s My Refund” and nothing came up. I tried calling the IRS number on the letter and that was futile, no answer or go to the website. Any suggestions how we can check on our refund? Can they possible still be reviewing it, with no update or status? Thanks

You need to create an IRS “account” following the instructions in this article: https://www.treasurydirect.gov/WF/WebFeedback?site=td01&subject=dflt

Many people are still waiting for 2020 refunds. The IRS is still a mess regarding that issue. But this account will show you everything that you can possibly learn about that return.
As a last resort if you aren’t satisfied, you can try contacting the TaxPayer Advocate office — but it’s also tough to get through. Here’s thelink to all that info: https://www.irs.gov/taxpayer-advocate
