2020 Taxes for expat — and stimulus refund

By Terry Savage on February 15, 2021 | Wild Card

My daughter is living & working in Sydney, Australia. She only worked there in 2020 but must pay taxes on her wages to the US correct? I believe she is given an automatic extension since she will not receive any tax forms from her employer until June, 2020. She also never received the first stimulus so will she still be able to indicate that when she does her taxes in June?

Terry Says

Whew this is complex. Fortunately, I know right where to send her. She should check in at www.TaxesforExpats.com.

I know she should file her 2020 return as soon as possible, so she can claim both the original $1200 and current $600 stimulus on Line 30 of her 2020 return. I haven’t heard of any deadline on that, but still she should file electronically and include her banking information. Read this article.
